Rehins NS in Dúchas
90 entries on the Dúchas website from pupils in Rehins NS 1939

Our School in Dúchas
Approximately 740,000 pages (288,000 pages in the pupils’ original exercise books; 451,000 pages in bound volumes) of folklore and local tradition were compiled by pupils from 5,000 primary schools in the Irish Free State between 1937 and 1939. Rehins N.S. was one of those schools with teacher, Máirtín Ó Longáin leading the project. When the digitization of these pages was undertaken some years ago, it was decided to include scans of the actual handwriting of the children. This is a very direct link with Rehins N.S. of the 1930's and also provides valuable local history and folklore. There are a total of 90 entries from Rehins N.S. on the Dúchas website - direct access to the Rehins page is provided below.

This is a sample from the first story on the first page of the Rehins section on the Schools Collection.. In all there are 192 pages of copybook pages digitized and presented on the Dúchas website. It is well worth viewing especially if either a parent or grandparent attended Rehins N.S. during the late 1930's - you may even see their names appearing on the right hand column where it is clearly shown which pupil collected each story from older people in the area.

Above is another example of the full list of stories collated by the pupils in Rehins N.S. The column on the left shows that "Churning" is story No. 20 and a column on the right shows who collected and wrote up this account.
